Test NTC-9: Checking Minimum Airflow

  1. Turn ignition off. Check throttle linkage and throttle plate in throttle body for binding condition. With throttle linkage at idle position, ensure throttle plate is fully closed and against its stop. If no binding condition exists and throttle plate fully closes, go to next step. If binding condition exists or throttle plate does not fully close, clean or repair throttle body as necessary. Perform TEST VER-5A .
  2. Check engine, engine vacuum hoses and brake booster for vacuum leaks. Ensure proper PCV valve is installed and PCV valve is operating correctly. If no vacuum leaks exist, correct PCV valve is used and PCV valve is operating correctly, go to next step. If vacuum leaks exist, incorrect PCV valve is used, or PCV valve is not operating correctly, repair vacuum hoses or PCV system as necessary. Perform TEST VER-5A .
  3. Disconnect PCV valve hose from inlet manifold and cap vacuum port on inlet manifold. Disconnect idle purge hose from throttle body. Using small vacuum hose, install Air Metering Fitting (6457) on idle purge hose fitting on throttle body. Start engine and allow engine to idle. Operate engine until engine coolant temperature is more than 180°F (82°C). Using scan tool manufacturer's instructions, access the MINIMUM AIR FLOW. If engine RPM is 550-1300 RPM, test is complete. If engine RPM is not 550-1300 RPM, go to next step.
  4. Turn ignition off. Remove throttle body. With throttle fully open on throttle body, clean throttle body with parts cleaner. Using soft brush or pad, ensure throttle body bore and throttle plate are clean. Dry throttle body with compressed air. Reinstall throttle body with air metering fitting installed on idle purge hose fitting on throttle body. Start engine. Using scan tool manufacturer's instructions, access the MINIMUM AIR FLOW. If engine RPM is 550-1300 RPM, throttle body is okay. Test is complete. If engine RPM is not 550-1300 RPM, replace throttle body. Perform TEST VER-5A .
