Test NTC-40: Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor Circuit
- Disconnect Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor. ECT sensor is located near engine coolant filler cap. See Figure. Measure resistance between ECT sensor terminals. Resistance should be 9000-11,000 ohms at 77°F (25°C) and 600-800 at 212°F (100°C). If resistance is as specified, go to next step. If resistance is not as specified, replace ECT sensor.
- Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and Green/White wire at ECT sensor harness connector. If voltage is 4.7-5.2 volts, go to next step. If voltage is not 4.7-5.2 volts, check Green/White wire between ECT sensor and terminal No. 26 at PCM harness connector A-77. See Figure. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article. Repair wiring as necessary. If wiring is okay, replace PCM.
- Check for continuity between ground and Black/Green wire at ECT sensor harness connector. If continuity exists, inspect ECT sensor harness connector for damaged pins, corrosion or loose terminals. Repair connector as necessary. If connector is okay, replace PCM. If continuity does not exist, check for open in Black/Green wire between ECT sensor and terminal No. 43 at PCM harness connector A-78. Circuit runs through junction connector No. 3. See WIRING DIAGRAMS article. Repair wiring as necessary. If wiring is okay, replace PCM.
