Using Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL)

  1. Note location of MIL on instrument cluster, left of tachometer. The MIL may also be referred to as the CHECK ENGINE or SERVICE ENGINE SOON light.
  2. Cycle ignition on, off, on, off and back on within 5 seconds. Count number of times MIL flashes on and off. Number of flashes represents the DTC. There is a slight pause between the flashes to represent first and second digits of the DTC. If more than one DTC exists, there will be a 4-second pause between the DTCs.
  3. If any DTCs are displayed, perform appropriate diagnostic test. See DTC & TEST IDENTIFICATION  table under DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS.
  4. After repair is complete, clear DTCs from PCM memory. See CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES . If no DTCs are displayed, diagnose by symptom. See TEST NTC-1: NO TROUBLE CODE TEST MENU  under DIAGNOSTIC TESTS.
