Remote Keyless Entry Problems
NOTE:
After any repair on remote keyless entry system, all transmitters used with vehicle may have to be programmed using scan tool. See PROGRAMMING
.
- Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, select BODY SYSTEM, then BODY COMPUTER. Scan tool will perform a CCD bus test. If scan tool displays NO RESPONSE, go to BATTERY POWER TO MODULE DISCONNECTED OR NO RESPONSE FROM BCM under COMMUNICATIONS. If scan tool displays a bus failure message, perform appropriate bus failure test under COMMUNICATIONS . If scan tool does not display NO RESPONSE or any bus failure messages, go to next step.
- Using scan tool, select SENSOR DISPLAY and read ignition voltage. If scan tool displays less than 10 volts, go to BATTERY POWER TO MODULE DISCONNECTED OR NO RESPONSE FROM BCM under COMMUNICATIONS. If scan tool displays 10 volts or more, go to next step.
- Remove and inspect batteries from Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) transmitter. Each battery should have about 3.2 volts. Replace batteries as necessary and retest. If batteries are okay, reinstall batteries in transmitter. Operate door locks from RKE transmitter. If door locks lock when transmitter is actuated, system is functioning properly at this time. Fault may be intermittent. If door locks do not lock when transmitter is actuated, go to next step.
- Turn ignition on. Ensure transmission is in Park. Using scan tool, select MISCELLANEOUS, then RKE FOB TEST. This will put Body Control Module (BCM) in diagnostic mode. Observe scan tool and press any button on transmitter. If scan tool displays PROGRAMMED XMITTER SIGNAL RECEIVED, no problem is detected at this time. Fault may be intermittent. If scan tool displays NON-PROGRAMMED XMITTER SIGNAL RECEIVED, program all transmitters using scan tool. See PROGRAMMING
. If scan tool does not display either message, go to next step.NOTE: RKE FOB test mode will last for 10 minutes if not exited. To exit test mode, press BACK PAGE on scan tool or turn ignition off.
- Obtain a known-good transmitter (peanut style) from a similar model. Ensure scan tool is still in RKE FOR TEST mode. Observe scan tool and press any button on transmitter. If scan tool displays NON-PROGRAMMED XMITTER SIGNAL RECEIVED, replace original transmitter and program all transmitters used with vehicle. See PROGRAMMING . If scan tool does not display NON-PROGRAMMED XMITTER SIGNAL RECEIVED, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off. Access RKE module under instrument panel cover. See Figure . Disconnect RKE module connector. Measure resistance between ground and terminal No. 4 (Black/Light Green wire) at RKE module connector. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Black/Light Green wire. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step.
- Measure voltage between ground and terminal No. 3 (Pink wire) at RKE module connector. If voltage is 10 volts or less, repair open in Pink wire. If voltage is more than 10 volts, go to next step.
- Measure resistance between ground and terminal No. 5 (Dark Blue wire) at RKE module connector. If Dark Blue wire is grounded, RKE system will be inoperative. If resistance is less than 2000 ohms, repair short to ground in Dark Blue wire between BCM and RKE module connector. If resistance is 2000 ohms or more, go to next step.
- Ensure gear shift selector is in Park. Measure voltage between ground and terminal No. 6 (Light Green/Red wire) at RKE module harness connector. If voltage is more than 4 volts, go to next step. If voltage is 4 volts or less, go to step 11 .
- Connect a jumper wire between ground and terminal No. 5 (Dark Blue wire) at RKE module connector. Disconnect BCM connector "A". BCM is located with junction block under driver's side instrument panel. See Figure . Using scan tool in ohmmeter mode, measure resistance at terminal No. 37 (Dark Blue wire) at BCM connector "A". See Figure . If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Dark Blue wire between BCM and RKE module. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace RKE module.
- Disconnect BCM connector "A". BCM is located with junction block under driver's side instrument panel. See Figure . Connect a jumper wire between ground and terminal No. 6 (Light Green/Red wire) at RKE module connector. Using scan tool in ohmmeter mode, measure resistance at terminal No. 4 (Light Green/Red wire) at BCM connector "A". See Figure . If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Light Green/Red wire between BCM and RKE module. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step.
- Remove jumper wire. Measure resistance between ground and terminal No. 4 (Light Green/Red wire) at BCM connector "A". If resistance is 4800 ohms or more, replace BCM. If resistance is less than 4800 ohms, repair short to ground in Light Green/Red wire.
