DTC P0622: Generator Field Not Switching Properly: Testing

  1. Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, actuate generator field driver circuit. Using a test light connected to ground, backprobe generator field driver circuit (Dark Green wire) at generator 2-pin connector. If test light illuminates brightly and flashes, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate brightly and flash, go to step  4 .
  2. Using scan tool, erase DTCs. Wiggle wiring harness from generator to PCM. Using scan tool, read DTCs with actuator test still running. If generator field driver circuit failure returns and DTC P0622 resets, repair wiring harness as necessary where wiggling caused problem to appear. If DTC P0622 does not reset, go to next step.
  3. At this time, conditions required to set DTC are not present. Turn ignition off. Visually inspect related connectors, hoses and wiring harness for damage. Repair connectors, hoses and wiring harness as necessary. If connectors, hoses and wiring harness are okay, test is complete.
NOTE: Before proceeding, carefully inspect all harness connectors for corrosion or loose terminals.
  4. Turn ignition off. Disconnect generator 2-pin connector. Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, actuate generator field driver circuit. Connect a test light between ground and ASD relay output circuit (Orange/Dark Green wire) at generator 2-pin harness connector. If test light illuminates brightly, go to next step. If test light does not illuminate brightly, repair open or short in ASD relay output circuit.
  5. Turn ignition off. Disconnect PCM harness connectors. See Figure . Measure resistance between ground and generator field driver circuit (Dark Green wire) at terminal No. 8 at PCM C1 harness connector. See Figure . If resistance is 5 ohms or more, go to next step. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair short to ground in Dark Green wire.
  6. Measure resistance of generator field driver circuit (Dark Green wire) between generator 2-pin harness connector and terminal No. 8 at PCM C1 harness connector. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Dark Green wire.
  7. Measure resistance between generator field terminals on back of generator. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair or replace generator.
  8. If no other possible causes are remaining, PCM is assumed to be defective. Replace PCM.
