BRAKE Indicator Not Operating Properly

NOTE: Ensure parking brake is released when performing test procedures unless instructed otherwise.
NOTE: After making any repairs, perform BODY CONTROL MODULES SYSTEM VERIFICATION TEST  under VERIFICATION TESTS.
  1. Check parking brake for interference, binding linkage and proper operation. Repair parking brake as necessary. See appropriate DISC & DRUM article in BRAKES. If parking brake is okay, go to next step.
  2. If this test is being performed because BRAKE indicator does not illuminate with empty brake fluid reservoir, go to next step. If BRAKE indicator illuminates with empty brake fluid reservoir, go to step  6 .
  3. Turn ignition off. Disconnect 2-pin brake fluid level switch connector. Turn ignition on. Wait 10 seconds. Using a fused jumper wire, connect brake fluid level switch connector terminals "A", ground circuit (Black wire) and "B", BRAKE indicator driver circuit (Gray/Black wire). If BRAKE indicator does not illuminate, leave brake fluid level switch connector disconnected, and go to next step. If BRAKE indicator illuminates, replace brake fluid level switch.
  4. Turn ignition off. Remove jumper wire. Disconnect instrument cluster connector C2. Measure resistance of BRAKE indicator driver circuit (Gray/Black wire) between brake fluid level switch connector terminal "B" and instrument cluster connector C2 terminal No. 3. See Figure . If resistance is less than 5 ohms, leave brake fluid level switch connector disconnected, and go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Gray/Black wire.
  5. Ensure instrument cluster connector C2 is properly connected. Turn ignition on. Wait 10 seconds. Connect jumper wire between ground and brake fluid level switch connector terminal "B", BRAKE indicator driver circuit (Gray/black wire). If BRAKE indicator illuminates, repair open in Black wire between brake fluid level switch and ground. If BRAKE indicator does not illuminate, replace instrument cluster.
  6. Turn ignition on. If BRAKE indicator remains on after 10 seconds, go to next step. If BRAKE indicator does not illuminate, go to step  11 .
  7. Check brake fluid level. Fill brake fluid reservoir as necessary. If brake fluid is level is okay, go to next step.
  8. Turn ignition off. Disconnect parking brake switch connector. Turn ignition on. If BRAKE indicator goes out after 10 seconds, replace parking brake switch. If BRAKE indicator remains on after 10 seconds, go to next step.
  9. Turn ignition off. Ensure parking brake switch is properly connected. Disconnect brake fluid level switch connector. Turn ignition on. If BRAKE indicator goes out after 10 seconds, replace brake fluid level switch. If BRAKE indicator does not go out after 10 seconds, leave brake fluid level switch connector disconnected, and go to next step.
  10. Turn ignition off. Disconnect parking brake switch connector. Measure resistance between ground and instrument cluster connector C2 terminal No. 3, BRAKE indicator driver circuit (Gray/Black wire). See Figure . If resistance is more than 100 k/ohms, replace instrument cluster. If resistance is 100 k/ohms or less, repair short to ground in Gray/Black wire.
  11. Turn ignition off, then on. Wait 10 seconds. Engage parking brake. If BRAKE indicator illuminates with parking brake engaged, go to next step. If brake indicator does not illuminate with parking brake engaged, go to step  13 .
  12. Release parking brake. Crank engine while observing BRAKE indicator. If BRAKE indicator does not illuminate while engine is cranking, replace instrument cluster. If BRAKE indicator illuminates when engine is cranking, fault may be intermittent. Check related wiring and connectors for poor connections or damage to wiring harness. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  . Repair any problems found as necessary. If no problems are found, check if any Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) apply to vehicle. If no TSBs apply, test is complete.
  13. Turn ignition off. Disconnect parking brake switch connector. Turn ignition on. Wait 10 seconds. Connect a fused jumper wire between ground and 1-pin parking brake switch connector, BRAKE indicator driver circuit (Gray/Black wire). If BRAKE indicator illuminates, replace parking brake switch. If BRAKE indicator does not illuminate, leave parking brake switch connector disconnected, and go to next step.
  14. Turn ignition off. Disconnect instrument cluster connector C2. Measure resistance of BRAKE indicator driver circuit (Gray/Black wire) between parking brake switch connector and instrument cluster connector C2 terminal No. 3. See Figure . If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace instrument cluster. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Gray/Black wire.
