NOTE: After making any repairs, perform BODY VERIFICATION TEST  under VERIFICATION TESTS.
  1. Close all doors and liftgate. Turn ignition off. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). DLC is located on bottom of instrument panel, to left of brake pedal. See Figure. Using scan tool, select BODY, ELECTRO/MECH CLUSTER, then INPUT/OUTPUT. Read status of DVR DOOR AJAR SW, PASSDOOR AJAR SW, LIFTGATE AJAR SW and DOME LAMP OUTPUT. If scan tool displays DVR DOOR AJAR SW CLOSED, go to next step. If scan tool displays PASSDOOR AJAR SW CLOSED, go to step  6. If scan tool displays LIFTGATE AJAR SW CLOSED, go to step  10. If scan tool displays DOME LAMP OUTPUT ON, go to step  14.
  2. Open driver's door. Disconnect driver door ajar switch. Using scan tool, select BODY, ELECTRO/MECH CLUSTER, then INPUT/OUTPUT. Read status of DVR DOOR AJAR SW. If scan tool displays DVR DOOR AJAR SW CLOSED, go to next step. If scan tool displays DVR DOOR AJAR SW OPEN, replace switch.
  3. Remove instrument cluster. See ANALOG INSTRUMENT PANELS - PT CRUISER article. Disconnect 26-pin Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) module connector, located below pad in center of instrument panel. Using ohmmeter, check resistance of driver door ajar switch sense circuit (Tan wire) between driver door ajar switch harness connector terminal and ground. If resistance is more than 100 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is less than 100 ohms, repair short to ground on Tan wire.
  4. Connect instrument cluster. Using scan tool, select BODY, ELECTRO/MECH CLUSTER, then INPUT/OUTPUT. Read status of DVR DOOR AJAR SW. If scan tool displays DVR DOOR AJAR SW CLOSED, go to next step. If scan tool displays DVR DOOR AJAR SW OPEN, replace RKE module. See REMOTE KEYLESS ENTRY SYSTEMS - PT CRUISER article.
  5. Replace instrument cluster. See ANALOG INSTRUMENT PANELS - PT CRUISER article.
  6. Ensure all passenger doors are closed. Using scan tool, select BODY, ELECTRO/MECH CLUSTER, then INPUT/OUTPUT. Monitor status of PASS DOOR AJAR SW. Disconnect each passenger door switch, one at a time. If scan tool display did not change to PASS DOOR AJAR SW OPEN, go to next step. If scan tool display changed, replace switch that was disconnected when display changed.
  7. Ensure all passenger door switches are disconnected. Monitor status of PASS DOOR AJAR SW. Disconnect RKE module. See REMOTE KEYLESS ENTRY SYSTEMS - PT CRUISER article. If scan tool display did not change to PASS DOOR AJAR SW OPEN, go to next step. If scan tool display changed, replace RKE module. See REMOTE KEYLESS ENTRY SYSTEMS - PT CRUISER article.
  8. Remove instrument cluster. See ANALOG INSTRUMENT PANELS - PT CRUISER article. Using ohmmeter, check resistance of passenger door ajar switch sense circuit (Dark Blue/Orange wire) between passenger door ajar switch harness connector terminal and ground. If resistance is more than 100 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is less than 100 ohms, repair short to ground on Dark Blue/Orange wire.
  9. Replace instrument cluster. See ANALOG INSTRUMENT PANELS - PT CRUISER article.
  10. Open liftgate. Disconnect Black 2-pin liftgate ajar switch connector, located in center of liftgate. Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, select BODY, ELECTRO/MECH CLUSTER, INPUT/OUTPUT and LIFTGATE AJAR SW. If switch state is CLOSED, go to next step. If switch state is OPEN, replace liftgate ajar switch.
  11. Disconnect RKE module. See REMOTE KEYLESS ENTRY SYSTEMS - PT CRUISER article. Check scan tool display. If switch state is CLOSED, go to next step. If switch state is OPEN, replace RKE module. See REMOTE KEYLESS ENTRY SYSTEMS - PT CRUISER article.
  12. Turn ignition off. Remove instrument cluster. See ANALOG INSTRUMENT PANELS - PT CRUISER article. Using ohmmeter, check resistance of liftgate ajar switch sense circuit (Tan/Black wire) between liftgate ajar switch harness connector terminal No. 1 and ground. If resistance is more than 100 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is less than 100 ohms, repair short to ground on Tan/Black wire.
  13. Replace instrument cluster. See ANALOG INSTRUMENT PANELS - PT CRUISER article.
  14. Adjust dimmer switch to middle position. Using ohmmeter, check resistance between instrument cluster harness connector C2 terminal No. 7, panel lights dimmer signal circuit (Red wire) and ground. If resistance is less than 100 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 100 ohms or more, replace instrument cluster. See ANALOG INSTRUMENT PANELS - PT CRUISER article.
  15. Disconnect Gray 20-pin multifunction switch connector. Using ohmmeter, check resistance between instrument cluster harness connector C2 terminal No. 7, panel lights dimmer signal circuit (Red wire) and ground. If resistance is 200 ohms or more, go to next step. If resistance is less than 200 ohms, repair short to ground on Red wire.
  16. Replace multifunction switch. See STEERING COLUMN SWITCHES - PT CRUISER article.
