DTC P1282: Fuel Pump Relay Control Circuit: Testing

  1. Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, actuate fuel pump relay. Fuel pump relay is located in Power Distribution Center (PDC). See Figure . If fuel pump relay clicks, go to next step. If fuel pump relay does not click, go to step  4 .
  2. Turn ignition off. Visually inspect wiring harness and connectors between fuel pump relay and PCM. If a problem is found, repair wiring or connectors as necessary. If no problems are found, go to next step.
  3. Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, actuate fuel pump relay. Wiggle wiring harness between fuel pump relay and PCM while relay is actuating. If relay stops clicking or becomes irregular when wiggling wiring harness, repair wiring as necessary where wiggling causes clicking to stop or become irregular. If relay does not stop clicking or become irregular when wiggling wiring harness, test is complete.
  4. Turn ignition off. Remove fuel pump relay from PDC. Inspect connectors for damage or poor connections. Repair connectors as necessary. If connectors are okay, turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and fused ignition switch output circuit (Dark Blue/White wire) at fuel pump relay harness connector terminal No. 4. See Figure . If voltage is more than 10 volts, go to next step. If voltage is 10 volts or less, repair open or short in fused ignition switch output circuit.
  5. Turn ignition off. Measure resistance between fuel pump relay terminals No. 2 and 4 (component side). If resistance is 50-90 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is not 50-90 ohms, replace fuel pump relay.
  6. Ensure ignition is off. Disconnect PCM harness connectors. See Figure . Measure resistance of fuel pump relay control circuit (Brown wire) between terminal No. 4 at fuel pump relay harness connector and terminal No. 74 at PCM C2 harness connector. See Figure . If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in Brown wire.
  7. Measure resistance between ground and fuel pump relay control circuit (Brown wire) at terminal No. 4 at fuel pump relay harness connector. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, go to next step. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair short to ground in Brown wire.
  8. If no other possible causes are remaining, replace PCM.
