Fog Lights Will Not Turn On
NOTE:
Ensure headlight high and low beams operate properly before proceeding.
NOTE:
After making any repairs, perform BODY VERIFICATION TEST
under VERIFICATION TESTS.
Possible Causes:
- Fog Light Relay Output CKT Open
- Fog Light Relay Control CKT Open
- Open Fused B+ To Fog Relay
- Fog Light Relay Output CKT Shorted
- Fog Light Relay
- Body Control Module
- Headlight Switch
Testing
- Turn ignition off. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC). Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, read HEADLIGHT SWITCH voltage. If voltage is about 3 volts, go to next step. If voltage is not about 3 volts, replace headlight switch. See REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in ANALOG INSTRUMENT PANELS article.
- Locate fog light relay in junction block. See Figure and Figure . Using scan tool, actuate fog light relay. If relay clicks, go to next step. If relay does not click, go to step 5 .
- Remove fog light relay from junction block. Measure voltage between ground and fog light relay connector terminal No. 66. If voltage is more than 10 volts, leave fog light relay removed and go to next step. If voltage is 10 volts or less, replace junction block. See JUNCTION BLOCK under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
- Connect a fused jumper wire between fog light relay connector terminals No. 66 and 67. If fog lights illuminate, replace fog light relay. If fog lights do not illuminate, repair open in fog light relay output circuit (Light Blue wire) between headlight switch connector terminal No. 11 and junction block connector C2 terminal No. 2. See Figure and Figure .
- Turn ignition off. Remove and inspect fuse No. 16 (20-amp) in junction block. See Figure and Figure . If fuse is open, go to next step. If fuse is okay, install fuse and go to step 7 .
- Remove fog light relay from junction block. Measure resistance between ground and fog light relay connector terminal No. 67. If resistance is less than 100 ohms, repair short to ground in fog light relay output circuit (Light Blue wire) between headlight switch connector terminal No. 11 and junction block connector C2 terminal No. 2 and replace fuse. See Figure and Figure . If resistance is 100 ohms or more, fault may be intermittent. Check related wiring and connectors for poor connections or damage to wiring harness. See WIRING DIAGRAMS . Repair any problems found as necessary and replace fuse. If no problems are found, check if any Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) apply to vehicle. If no TSBs apply, test is complete. Replace fuse.
- Remove fog light relay from junction block. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and fog light relay connector terminal No. 66. See Figure and Figure . If voltage is more than 10 volts, leave fog light relay removed and go to next step. If voltage is 10 volts or less, replace junction block. See JUNCTION BLOCK under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
- Turn ignition off. Remove Body Control Module (BCM) from back of junction block. Measure resistance between fog light relay connector terminal No. 64 and terminal No. 17 at BCM connector on back of junction block. See Figure and Figure . If resistance is less than 5 ohms, leave fog light relay removed and go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, replace junction block. See JUNCTION BLOCK under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
- Connect BCM to back of junction block. Connect a 12-volt test light between fog light relay connector terminals No. 64 and 65. Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, actuate fog light relay. If test light illuminates, replace fog light relay. If fog light relay does not illuminate, replace BCM. See BODY CONTROL MODULE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
