April 5, 2026: LEMON Manuals is launched! Read the announcement.

Demagnetizing Procedure

  1. A magnetic field can adversely affect Compass/Mini-Trip Computer (CMTC) compass operation and magnetize the roof panel. Magnetized roof panel can be caused by a magnetic base antenna, audio speakers, magnetic signs, etc. Removing magnetic interfering objects will usually restore normal compass operation. If CAL remains displayed on CMTC display and compass display remains blank, roof panel must be demagnetized. Demagnetizing procedure will demagnetize roof and overhead console mounting screws. Go to next step to start procedure.
  2. Turn ignition off. Plug Demagnetizer (6029) into a standard 110/115 A/C volt outlet. Keep demagnetizer tool at least 24" away from compass area when plugging demagnetizer into outlet. Slowly approach and contact an overhead console forward mounting screw with plastic coated tip of demagnetizer tool for about 2 seconds.
  3. After about 2 seconds, back away from screw until tip of demagnetizer is about 12 inches from screw head. Repeat this procedure for all remaining overhead console mounting screws. After last screw is demagnetized, remove demagnetizer from vehicle and unplug demagnetizer from outlet. Using a 8 1/2 x 11" piece of paper, place paper lengthwise on roof directly above compass. The purpose of the paper is to protect roof panel from scratches and define area to be demagnetized.
  4. Plug demagnetizer into outlet, keeping it at least 2 feet away from compass unit. Slowly approach center of roof panel at windshield. Working back 12" from windshield, contact roof panel with tip of demagnetizer. Use slow sweeping motions of about 4" from either side of center and leave about 1/2" between sweeps.
  5. After sweeps are completed, slowly back away from roof panel until demagnetizer tip is about 2 feet from roof. Unplug demagnetizer. Recalibrate compass. See COMPASS CALIBRATION PROCEDURE .
