EL Panel Short

NOTE: After making any repairs, perform BODY VERIFICATION TEST  under VERIFICATION TESTS.
  1. Turn ignition on. Turn headlight switch on. Check operation of instrument cluster illumination lights. If any instrument cluster gauges are illuminated, go to step  3. If instrument cluster gauges are not illuminated, replace instrument cluster. See ANALOG INSTRUMENT PANELS article.
  2. With headlight switch on, check operation of headlights. If headlights are on, go to next step. If headlights are not on, check for possible exterior light DTCs. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE IDENTIFICATION  table under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. Repair headlight system as necessary. See HEADLIGHTS in appropriate SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL.
  3. Using scan tool, erase Body Control Module (BCM) DTCs. Turn ignition off and back on. Wait approximately 2 minutes. If EL PANEL SHORT resets, go to next step. If EL PANEL SHORT does not reset, perform instrument cluster self-test and diagnose concern. See ANALOG INSTRUMENT PANELS article.
  4. Turn ignition off. Disconnect instrument cluster connector. Locate and disconnect Body Control Module (BCM) connector C4. See COMPONENT LOCATIONS . See Figure. Using DVOM, measure resistance between ground and instrument cluster connector terminal No. 1 (Orange/Yellow wire). See Figure. If resistance is greater than 10 k/ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 10 k/ohms or less, repair short to ground in Orange/Yellow wire.
  5. Using DVOM, measure resistance of Orange/Yellow wire between instrument cluster connector terminal No. 1 and BCM connector C4 terminal No. 12. See Figure. If resistance is 5 ohms or less, go to next step. If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, repair open in Orange/Yellow wire.
  6. Using DVOM, measure resistance between ground and instrument cluster connector terminals No. 7 (Black/Light Green wire) and No. 13 (Black/Light Blue wire). If resistance is 5 ohms or less, go to next step. If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, repair open in Black/Light Green or Black/Light Blue wire.
  7. Reconnect instrument cluster connector. Connect a fused jumper wire between battery voltage and BCM connector C4 terminal No. 12. Turn ignition on. Check operation of instrument cluster illumination lights. If instrument cluster gauges are illuminated, test is complete. If instrument cluster gauges are not illuminated, replace BCM. See BODY CONTROL MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
