Panel Dimming Output Short

NOTE: After making any repairs, perform BODY VERIFICATION TEST  under VERIFICATION TESTS.
  1. Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, record and erase Body Control Module (BCM) DTCs. Turn ignition off. Wait 15 seconds. Turn ignition on. Turn headlights on. Recheck for DTCs. If PANEL DIMMING OUTPUT SHORT resets, go to next step. If PANEL DIMMING OUTPUT SHORT does not reset, conditions necessary to set this DTC are not present at this time. Check for intermittent poor connections or faulty circuits and repair as necessary.
  2. Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, record and erase BCM DTCs. Turn ignition off. Disconnect instrument cluster connector. See ANALOG INSTRUMENT PANELS article. Turn ignition on. Turn headlights on. Recheck for DTCs. If PANEL DIMMING OUTPUT SHORT resets, go to next step. If PANEL DIMMING OUTPUT SHORT does not reset, replace instrument panel.
  3. Using scan tool, record and erase BCM DTCs. Turn ignition off. Reconnect instrument cluster connector. Disconnect headlight switch connector. See ANALOG INSTRUMENT PANELS article. Turn ignition on. Recheck for DTCs. If PANEL DIMMING OUTPUT SHORT resets, go to next step. If PANEL DIMMING OUTPUT SHORT does not reset, replace headlight switch.
  4. Using scan tool, record and erase BCM DTCs. Turn ignition off. Reconnect headlight switch connector. Disconnect instrument panel switch bank connector located in center of instrument panel. Turn ignition on. Turn headlights on. Recheck for DTCs. If PANEL DIMMING OUTPUT SHORT resets, go to next step. If PANEL DIMMING OUTPUT SHORT does not reset, replace instrument panel switch bank.
  5. Using scan tool, record and erase BCM DTCs. Turn ignition off. Reconnect instrument panel switch bank connector. Disconnect mirror switch connector. Turn ignition on. Turn headlights on. Recheck for DTCs. If PANEL DIMMING OUTPUT SHORT resets, go to next step. If PANEL DIMMING OUTPUT SHORT does not reset, replace mirror switch.
  6. Using scan tool, record and erase BCM DTCs. Turn ignition off. Reconnect mirror switch connector. Disconnect rear blower control switch connector. Turn ignition on. Turn headlights on. Recheck for DTCs. If PANEL DIMMING OUTPUT SHORT resets, go to next step. If PANEL DIMMING OUTPUT SHORT does not reset, replace rear blower control switch.
  7. Using scan tool, record and erase BCM DTCs. Turn ignition off. Reconnect rear blower control switch connector. Disconnect A/C-heater control panel connector. See A/C-HEATER CONTROL PANEL  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Turn ignition on. Turn headlights on. Recheck for DTCs. If PANEL DIMMING OUTPUT SHORT resets, go to next step. If PANEL DIMMING OUTPUT SHORT does not reset, replace A/C-heater control panel.
  8. Using scan tool, record and erase BCM DTCs. Turn ignition off. Reconnect A/C-heater control panel connector. Disconnect radio connector. See RADIO  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Turn ignition on. Turn headlights on. Recheck for DTCs. If PANEL DIMMING OUTPUT SHORT resets, go to next step. If PANEL DIMMING OUTPUT SHORT does not reset, replace radio.
  9. Turn ignition off. Reconnect A/C-heater control panel connector. Locate and disconnect BCM connectors. See COMPONENT LOCATIONS . Disconnect instrument cluster connector. Using DVOM, measure resistance between ground and instrument cluster connector terminal No. 1 (Orange/Yellow wire). See Figure. If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or less, repair short to ground in Orange/Yellow wire.
  10. Turn ignition off. Reconnect instrument cluster. Disconnect headlight switch connector. Using DVOM, measure resistance between ground and headlight switch connector terminal No. 12 (Orange/Brown wire). See Figure. If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or less, repair short to ground in Orange/Brown wire.
  11. Turn ignition off. Reconnect headlight switch. Disconnect A/C-heater control panel connector. Using DVOM, measure resistance between ground and BCM connector C4 terminal No. 2 (Orange/Gray wire). See Figure. If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or less, repair short to ground in Orange/Gray wire.
  12. Turn ignition off. Reconnect A/C-heater control panel. Disconnect instrument panel switch bank connector. Using DVOM, measure resistance between ground and instrument panel switch bank connector terminal No. 12 (Orange/Tan wire). See Fig 1. If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or less, repair short to ground in Orange/Tan wire.
  13. Turn ignition off. Reconnect instrument panel switch bank connector. Disconnect mirror switch connector. Using DVOM, measure resistance between ground and mirror switch connector terminal No. 5 (Orange/Light Blue wire). See Fig 2. If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or less, repair short to ground in Orange/Light Blue wire.
  14. Turn ignition off. Reconnect mirror switch. Disconnect rear blower motor switch connector. Using DVOM, measure resistance between ground and BCM connector C3 terminal No. 9 (Orange/Dark Green wire). If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or less, repair short to ground in Orange/Dark Green wire.
  15. Turn ignition off. Reconnect rear blower motor switch. Disconnect radio connector. Using DVOM, measure resistance between ground and radio connector C1 terminal No. 3 (Orange/Tan wire). See Figure. If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, replace BCM. See BODY CONTROL MODULE  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. If resistance is 5 ohms or less, repair short to ground in Orange/Tan wire.
