Battery Load Test

  1. Check battery for obvious damage, such as a cracked or broken case or cover, which could permit loss of electrolyte. If damage is obvious, replace battery.
CAUTION: Do not charge battery if hydrometer is clear or light yellow. Instead, replace battery. If battery feels hot, or if violent gassing or spewing of electrolyte through vent hole occurs, discontinue charging or reduce charging rate to avoid personal injury.
CAUTION: The battery temperature must be estimated by touch, taking into consideration ambient temperature to which battery has been exposed for preceding few hours.
  2. Check hydrometer. If green dot is visible, go to load test procedure. If indicators dark, but green is not visible, charge battery. For charging a battery removed from vehicle. Connect a voltmeter and a battery load tester across battery terminals. Apply a 300-ampere load for 15 seconds to remove surface charge from battery. Remove load.
  3. Wait 15 seconds to let battery recover. Apply a 270-ampere load. If voltage does not drop below minimum listed, battery is good and should be reinstalled. If voltage is less than minimum listed, replace battery.
