Steering Column
- If the steering column is being replaced, assemble components on the steering column as necessary before column installation. Refer to COLUMN, ASSEMBLY .NOTE:
When installing a tilt column, do not release the tilt lever from the locked position until after the column is installed on the instrument panel.
- Install the steering column through the steering column opening.
- Raise the steering column onto the mounting bracket and install the mounting bolts (1). Starting with the left upper nut and proceeding in a clockwise tightening sequence, tighten all four mounting bolts to the proper torque specification. Refer to TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS .
- Verify the front wheels of vehicle are in the STRAIGHT-AHEAD position.
- Collapse the intermediate shaft (1). Center it over the shaft extension, lining up the ends, then slide the intermediate shaft onto the shaft extension.
- Install the intermediate shaft coupling bolt (2) and tighten to the proper torque specification. Refer to TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS .
- Install the wiring harness routing clips on the bottom of the steering column.
- Connect the wiring harness connectors to the Steering Column Control Module (SCCM).
- Connect any other the wiring harness connectors.
- Push the tilt lever downward (released position).
- Position the column tilt at the full-upward position.
- Install the upper shroud (2) and the screw (1) to the column.
- Install the two screws (1) attaching the upper shroud to the steering column.
- Position the lower shroud on the column.
- Clip the shrouds to one another.
- Install the four screws (1) attaching the lower shroud to the upper shroud.
- Push the tilt lever upward, locking the column in place.
- Install the steering wheel. Refer to WHEEL, STEERING, INSTALLATION .
- Connect the wiring connector at the clockspring.
- Install the driver airbag. Refer to AIR BAG, DRIVER, INSTALLATION
.WARNING:
Do not connect the battery ground cable without following the proper procedure as indicated in the following step. Personal injury or death may result if the Airbag System Test is not performed first.
- Connect negative battery cable (1) on negative battery post.
- Install the battery access cover.
- Install the kick panel (1) and fasteners (2, 3)
- Install the steering column cover reinforcement using the four mounting screws.
- Test the operation of the all column mounted components. If applicable, reset the radio and the clock as necessary.
- Road test the vehicle to ensure proper operation of the steering system.
