A/C Clutch Relay Test

  1. With ignition switch in the RUN position, leave A/C clutch relay connected. A/C relay is located in relay box, near battery. See Figure . Backprobe A/C relay connector. Connect a voltmeter between, relay terminal No. 5 (Tan wire) and ground. See Figure . Voltmeter should read battery voltage. If battery voltage is present, go to next step. If battery voltage is not present, check fuse No. 8. If fuse No. 8 is okay, check for an open circuit to fuse No. 8.
  2. Connect voltmeter between relay terminal No. 4 (Red wire) and ground. See Figure . Voltmeter should read battery voltage. If battery voltage is present, go to next step. If battery voltage is not present, check fusible link in circuit. If fusible link is okay, check for an open circuit to fusible link.
  3. Connect voltmeter between relay terminals No. 5 (Tan wire) and No. 2 (Black wire). See Figure . Voltmeter should read battery voltage. If battery voltage is present, go to next step. If battery voltage is not present, check for an open circuit to Air Conditioning Control Module (ACM) connector terminal "C5" (Yellow/Orange wire). ACM is located on right side of heater housing. If circuit is okay, replace ACM.
  4. Connect voltmeter between relay terminals No. 4 (Red wire) and No. 1 (Light Green wire). See Figure . If A/C compressor clutch engages, replace A/C relay. If A/C compressor clutch does not engage, check for an open at A/C compressor clutch connector terminal "S." If compressor clutch engages, replace A/C clutch.
