Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) Test
- Disconnect TPS electrical connector. The TPS is mounted on throttle body, connected to throttle valve shaft. Turn ignition on. Using a DVOM, backprobe TPS harness connector between terminals "B" and "C" (marked on connector).
- Voltmeter should read approximately 5 volts. If voltmeter reading is incorrect, test vehicle with Diagnostic Readout Box (DRB-II) and Jeep/Eagle adapter or similar scan tool. See appropriate G - TESTING W/CODES article. If voltmeter reading is correct, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off. Check for continuity between TPS terminal "B" and ground. If circuit is open, test vehicle with DRB-II and Jeep/Eagle adapter or similar scan tool. If continuity is present, go to next step.
- Reconnect TPS electrical connector. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between TPS terminal "A" and ground. Voltmeter should read approximately .5-1.0 volt.
- If voltmeter reading is correct, TPS is okay. If voltmeter reading is incorrect, attempt to adjust TPS. See appropriate ADJUSTMENTS article. If TPS cannot be adjusted within specification, replace TPS.
