Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) Test

  1. Disconnect TPS electrical connector. The TPS is mounted on throttle body, connected to throttle valve shaft. Turn ignition on. Using a DVOM, backprobe TPS harness connector between terminals "B" and "C" (marked on connector).
  2. Voltmeter should read approximately 5 volts. If voltmeter reading is incorrect, test vehicle with Diagnostic Readout Box (DRB-II) and Jeep/Eagle adapter or similar scan tool. See appropriate G - TESTING W/CODES article. If voltmeter reading is correct, go to next step.
  3. Turn ignition off. Check for continuity between TPS terminal "B" and ground. If circuit is open, test vehicle with DRB-II and Jeep/Eagle adapter or similar scan tool. If continuity is present, go to next step.
  4. Reconnect TPS electrical connector. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between TPS terminal "A" and ground. Voltmeter should read approximately .5-1.0 volt.
  5. If voltmeter reading is correct, TPS is okay. If voltmeter reading is incorrect, attempt to adjust TPS. See appropriate ADJUSTMENTS article. If TPS cannot be adjusted within specification, replace TPS.
