With Bench Tester
- Clamp starter in bench tester and connect electrical meters as per tester instructions. Turn on switch and record meter readings for armature RPM, voltage draw and amperage. Readings should be within specification. See appropriate STARTER SPECIFICATIONS . Repair or replace starter if not within specification.
- If starter does not rotate and high current flow (amps) is indicated, check terminal connections, armature windings shorted to ground, or seized armature bearings.
- If starter does not rotate and no current flow (amps) conditions are indicated, check for open in armature windings or commutator bar segments after disassembly. Also check for broken brush springs, worn brushes, protruding mica insulation between commutator bars, or any other conditions that could prevent good contact between brushes and commutator (such as grease or oil).
