Without Bench Tester

  1. Clamp starter mounting flange in soft-jawed vise. Connect ammeter and carbon pile rheostat in series between a 12-volt battery positive terminal and starter battery terminal. See Fig 1 .
  2. Turn carbon pile rheostat to OFF position. Connect a cable from battery negative terminal to starter frame or mounting flange for grounding purposes. Connect voltmeter across starter motor cables. See Fig 1 .
  3. Adjust carbon pile rheostat until battery voltage shown on voltmeter is 11.5 volts. Use remote starter switch or jumper wire to engage starter. Ensure starter turns smoothly and freely, and maximum amperage is within specification. See STARTER SPECIFICATIONS  . Repair or replace starter if not within specification.
