Test 84A - OTIS Ambient Temperature Sensor

NOTE: For connector terminal identification, see CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION  . For wiring diagrams, see appropriate article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE:

Drive vehicle to update OTIS and perform TEST VER-1 after each repair.

CAUTION: Always turn ignition off prior to disconnecting any module connector.
  1. Gain access to Body Control Module (BCM). BCM is located behind right kick panel. DO NOT  disconnect BCM connectors. Turn ignition off. Close all doors and ensure all lamps are off for one minute. Go to next step.
  2. Using scan tool in ohmmeter mode, backprobe BCM Bone connector terminal No. 15 (Gray/Tan wire). If resistance is less than 30 ohms, go to step 4). If resistance is more than 30 ohms, go to next step.
  3. Disconnect and inspect BCM Bone connector. Repair connector as necessary. If connector is okay, replace BCM.
  4. Disconnect ambient (outside) temperature sensor connector, if not already disconnected. Sensor is located behind front bumper, left of center. Turn ignition off. Close all doors and ensure all lamps are off for one minute. Go to next step.
  5. Using scan tool in ohmmeter mode, check resistance of ambient temperature connector terminal No. 1 (Gray/Tan wire). If resistance is more than 40 ohms, repair open Gray/Tan wire. If resistance is less than 40 ohms, go to next step.
  6. Disconnect BCM Bone and Gray connectors. Check resistance of ambient temperature sensor connector terminal No. 1 (Gray/Tan wire). If resistance is less than 20,000 ohms, repair Gray/Tan wire for short to ground. If resistance is more than 20,000 ohms, go to next step.
  7. Check resistance of ambient temperature sensor connector terminal No. 2 (Violet/Light Green wire). If resistance is less than 20,000 ohms, repair Violet/Light Green wire for short to ground. If resistance is more than 20,000 ohms, go to next step.
  8. Using an external ohmmeter, check resistance between ambient temperature sensor connector terminals No. 1 (Gray/Tan wire) and No. 2 (Violet/Light Green wire). If resistance is less than 20,000 ohms, repair short between Gray/Tan wire and Violet/Light Green wire. If resistance is more than 20,000 ohms, go to next step.
  9. Reconnect ambient temperature sensor connector. Check resistance between BCM Bone connector terminal No. 15 (Gray/Tan wire) and BCM Gray connector terminal No. 10 (Violet/Light Green wire). Compare resistance reading with AMBIENT TEMPERATURE SENSOR VALUES SPECIFICATIONS table. If reading does not agree with specifications, replace ambient temperature sensor. If reading agrees with specifications, replace BCM.
