Inspection Procedure 33 - IGN System Inspection Procedure

WHEN ENGINE WILL NOT START

NOTE: For wiring diagram, see the WIRING DIAGRAMS article.
  1. Disconnect connector at ignition coil. Ignition coil is located on top of engine, between valve covers and contains a 3-pin connector.
  2. Install Test Harness (MD998478) between ignition coil and the connector. Connect tachometer to terminals No. 1 (Red clip) and No. 2 (Black clip) on test harness. Crank engine and note display on tachometer.
  3. Tachometer should display an engine speed that is 1/2 of the cranking speed. If tachometer display is correct, go to next step. If tachometer display is not correct, check ignition system circuit. Perform INSPECTION PROCEDURE 31.
  4. Check ignition timing when cranking engine. See ADJUSTMENTS - TURBO article. If ignition timing is within specification, inspection procedure is complete. If ignition timing is not correct, check for correct installation of crankshaft position sensor and timing belt cover.
