Vehicles with 2.0L turbo engine use a Mitsubishi reduction gear drive starter. Starter consists of a planetary gear drive and permanent magnets for current induction. Planetary gear drive is splined to both the armature shaft and overrunning clutch. Starter torque is transmitted to overrunning clutch pinion through planetary gears, which provide higher rotational speeds.

Vehicles with 2.0L non-turbo engine use a conventional 12-volt, 4-pole brush type direct drive starter.
