Scan Tool Operation

  1. The DRB-III scan tool or a generic scan tool may be used to monitor a specified component operating range. Component operating range is then compared to a normal operating range to determine if component is operating properly.
  2. When using the DRB-III scan tool, scan tool will perform all service data inspection procedures. A generic scan tool may perform only specified service data inspection procedures. See SCAN TOOL OPERATION table.
  3. Use scan tool to monitor specified component operation under specified operating condition. See SCAN TOOL SERVICE DATA SPECIFICATIONS table.
  4. Specified component operating range should be within specified normal operating range. See SCAN TOOL SERVICE DATA SPECIFICATIONS table. If component operating range is not within normal operating range, perform specified Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) test or specified trouble symptom inspection procedure (if available). See SCAN TOOL SERVICE DATA SPECIFICATIONS table.
  5. The DTC TESTS are listed under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC TESTS, before TROUBLE SYMPTOMS. Trouble symptom inspection procedures are listed after the DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) TESTS.

(1) Check with engine at normal operating temperature.
(2) Voltage should be 400 millivolts or less at idle and then change to 600-1000 millivolts when engine is accelerated to 2500 RPM.
(3) Check with engine at normal operating temperature, all accessories off and with transaxle in Park (A/T) or Neutral (M/T).
(4) Frequency should increase in response to increase in engine RPM.
(5) Check with ignition on or with engine running.
(6) Check with ignition on.
(7) Voltage should increase in proportion to throttle opening.
(8) Check with engine cranking and then with engine idling with closed throttle position switch in ON position and at specified coolant temperature.
(9) Engine speed on tachometer and scan tool should be the same.
(10) If throttle position sensor voltage increases 100 millivolts from voltage at idle to the voltage when throttle is slightly opened and closed throttle position switch turn off, throttle position sensor requires adjustment.
(11) Check with engine cranking and at specified coolant temperature.
(12) Check with engine at normal operating temperature, closed throttle position switch in ON position, all accessories off and with transaxle in Park (A/T) or Neutral (M/T).
(13) Check with transaxle in Low gear (A/T) or 2nd gear M/T) and wide open throttle.
(14) Check with ignition on and fuel tank cap removed.
