Self-Diagnostic Test Usage Procedures

  1. Before diagnosing an engine performance problem, refer to SELF-DIAGNOSTICS section in this article for diagnostic system functions, abilities and system diagnostic procedures.
  2. For Engine Control Module (ECM) connector terminal identification, see CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS section in this article. The ECM is located below instrument panel, in front of center console. ECM uses 12-pin, 16-pin, 22-pin and 26-pin connectors. For component locations, see COMPONENT LOCATIONS in SELF-DIAGNOSTICS section in this article.
  3. When performing specified DTC test, technician may be instructed to perform a specified trouble symptom inspection procedure, or check for possible cause by using a trouble symptom and then performing a specified inspection. Trouble symptoms and trouble symptom inspection procedures are listed under TROUBLE SYMPTOMS after the Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) tests. See SELF-DIAGNOSTIC TEST DIRECTORY table.
  4. Technician may be instructed to perform scan tool service data inspection on a specified component. Scan tool is used to monitor operation of a specified component under a specified operating condition. Component operation is then compared to a normal operating range to determine if component is operating properly. Scan tool service data inspection procedure is listed after TROUBLE SYMPTOMS. See SELF-DIAGNOSTIC TEST DIRECTORY table.
  5. Technician may be instructed to check for defective terminals or connections at a specified component or connector. It may be necessary to consult wiring diagram to determine which terminal or connection to check for specified component.
  6. When performing a specified trouble symptom inspection procedure, technician may be instructed to perform a scan tool actuator test on a specified component. Scan tool actuator test procedures are listed after SCAN TOOL SERVICE DATA INSPECTION PROCEDURE. See SELF-DIAGNOSTIC TEST DIRECTORY table.
