Test NTC-14A: Checking Timing Belt Alignment

NOTE: Perform TEST NTC-1A  or TEST NTC-13A  before proceeding.
CAUTION: A loose timing belt or improper belt replacement can cause it to jump a tooth or more. Improper timing belt replacement may cause severe engine damage.
  1. This procedure verifies proper crank and cam positions first, then updates Powertrain Control Module (PCM). Verify engine valve timing is within specification. See appropriate article in ENGINES. If engine valve timing is in specification, go to step 3)  . If engine valve timing is not within specification, repair engine valve timing as necessary. Go to next step.
  2. If vehicle is not a Neon, repair is complete. Perform TEST VER-2A . If vehicle is a Neon, using scan tool, select ADJUSTMENTS, then RELEARN CMP/CKP. Repair is complete. Perform TEST VER-2A .
  3. If PCM or any part tied to timing belt has been replaced, using scan tool, select ADJUSTMENTS, then RELEARN CMP/CKP. Repair is complete. Perform TEST VER-2A . If PCM or any part tied to timing belt has not been replaced, cam and crankshafts are positioned properly. Test is complete.
