Test TC-115A: Power Steering Switch Failure

NOTE: For connector terminal identification, see CONNECTOR IDENTIFICATION . For wiring diagram, see WIRING DIAGRAMS article.
  1. Disconnect power steering pressure switch connector. Connect a jumper wire to power steering pressure switch sense circuit. See POWER STEERING PRESSURE SWITCH CONNECTOR WIRE IDENTIFICATION  table. Using scan tool, monitor power steering pressure switch. While observing scan tool, touch jumper wire to ground 5 times. If power steering pressure switch changed from hi to low, go to next step. If power steering pressure switch did not change from hi to low, go to step 3)  .
  2. If vehicle is a Avenger, Sebring Coupe or Talon, replace power steering pressure switch. Perform TEST VER-2A . If vehicle is a Breeze, Cirrus, Neon, Sebring Convertible or Stratus, go to TEST TC-115B .
  3. Turn ignition off. Disconnect Powertrain Control Module (PCM) connector. Using an ohmmeter, check resistance of power steering pressure switch sense circuit between power steering pressure switch connector and PCM connector terminal No. 45. See POWER STEERING PRESSURE SWITCH CONNECTOR WIRE IDENTIFICATION  table. See PCM CONNECTOR WIRE IDENTIFICATION  table. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open power steering pressure switch sense circuit. Perform TEST VER-2A .
  4. Using an ohmmeter, check resistance of power steering pressure switch sense circuit between power steering pressure switch connector and ground. See POWER STEERING PRESSURE SWITCH CONNECTOR WIRE IDENTIFICATION  table. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair short to ground on power steering pressure switch sense circuit. Perform TEST VER-2A . If resistance is 5 ohms or more, replace PCM. Perform TEST VER-2A .
