Steering System: Gear: Installation: Installation
NOTE:
While raising the crossmember, pay close attention to the steering rack pinion shaft so that it properly fits up and into the dash panel boot between the rack and body.
- Rotate the stabilizer bar up and install the steering gear on the crossmember.
- Slowly raise the crossmember into mounted position using the transmission jack matching the crossmember to the marked locations on the body made during removal. Ensure that the steering rack pinion shaft is aligned with the dash panel boot opening.
- Install four NEW stabilizer bushing retainer bolts and tighten to 25 N.m (18 ft. lbs.)
- Install the four mounting bolts (2) securing the front crossmember (1) to the body. Tighten the crossmember mounting bolts to 165 N.m (122 ft. lbs.).
- Install two mounting bolts (1, 3) securing the front crossmember to the body. Tighten the bolts to 125 N.m (92 ft. lbs.)
- Remove the transmission jack.
- Install tunnel support brace (2). Install mounting bolts (1) and tighten to 100 N.m (74 ft. lbs.).
- Install the rear engine mount insulator. Refer to INSULATOR, ENGINE MOUNT, REAR, INSTALLATION or INSULATOR, ENGINE MOUNT, REAR, INSTALLATION .
- Install the exhaust pipe. Refer to MUFFLER, EXHAUST, INSTALLATION .
- Attach the upper stabilizer link at the strut on each side of the vehicle. While holding the link stud stationary, install and tighten each nut to 50 N.m (37 ft. lbs.).
- Attach the stabilizer bar link at each end of the stabilizer bar. At each link, install and tighten the nut while holding the stabilizer bar link lower stud stationary. Tighten the nuts to 50 N.m (37 ft. lbs.).
- Install outer tie rod end (5) to knuckle (3). Install nut (4) and tighten to 40 N.m (30 ft. lbs.).
- Install lower ball joint stud (1) to knuckle (3) and install retaining nut (2). Tighten nut to 65 N.m (48 ft. lbs.).
- If equipped, install the engine belly pan.
- On each side of the vehicle, install the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to INSTALLATION .
- Lower the vehicle.
- Verify the front wheels of vehicle are in the STRAIGHT-AHEAD position.
- Install intermediate shaft (2) to steering rack pinion shaft. Install a NEW pinch bolt and tighten to 55 N.m (40 ft. lbs.).
- Perform wheel alignment as necessary. Refer to WHEEL ALIGNMENT, STANDARD PROCEDURE .
