Fuel Injection System - Multi-Point: Description

The Ford multi-point fuel injection system is a pulse time, mass air flow type. It is part of the Electronic Engine Control (EEC-IV) system which governs the operation of the fuel, ignition, and emission systems.

The multi-point injection system consists of 4 basic sub-systems: Fuel delivery, air induction, engine sensors and the Electronic Control Assembly (ECA). The fuel delivery system includes a high pressure fuel pump and the fuel charging manifold assembly (including the fuel injectors and fuel pressure regulator).

The air induction system consists of the air cleaner, air vane meter assembly, throttle body, throttle air by-pass valve, intake manifold, and turbocharger (if equipped).

Various sensors supply the Electronic Control Assembly (ECA) with engine operating information. These sensors include the Throttle Position sensor, Engine Coolant Sensor, Vane Airflow Sensor, Vane Air Temperature Sensor, Exhaust Gas Oxygen Sensor, Neutral/Drive Switch, Barometric Pressure Sensor, and Profile Ignition Pick-Up. The ECA also senses A/C clutch engagement in order to maintain idle speed with increased engine load.

The Electronic Control Assembly is the "brain" of the system. Information supplied to the ECA by the engine sensors is interpreted as specific engine operating conditions. The ECA then controls engine functions to produce an ideal air/fuel mixture and ignition timing in response to these conditions.

NOTE: Additional test information may be found in the appropriate 1.6L EFI/2.3L TURBO TEST article in the ENGINE PERFORMANCE section. For more Theory and Operation information, see EEC IV THEORY/OPERATION article in the ENGINE PERFORMANCE section.
