Distributor Signal Test

  1. Disconnect wire from negative side of coil. Connect test light between positive battery terminal and disconnected wire. Crank engine and check for test light flash. If test light flashes, go to step 3). If test light does not flash, proceed to next step.
  2. Disconnect distributor 3-wire connector. Connect test light between positive battery terminal and connector ground terminal. Crank engine and check for test light. If test light does not come on, repair open circuit between distributor and ground. If light does come on, go to next step.
  3. Using DVOM, measure voltage between distributor Yellow/Black wire and ground, while cranking engine. If reading is 1.5 volts or less, replace crankshaft position sensor. If reading is more than 1.5 volts, go to SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article.
