Ford uses 2 typesstarter motors, permanent magnet and positive engagement, for all passenger cars except Probe with 2.2L engine.

The permanent magnet starting system includes a permanent magnet, 4-brush starting motor with solenoid actuated drive, starter-ignition switch, neutral start switch (some automatic transmission models), starter relay and circuit wiring.

The positive engagement starting system includes a 4-pole, 4-brush starter motor with integral positive engagement drive, starter-ignition switch, neutral start switch (some automatic transmission models), starter relay and circuit wiring.
