Pressure Testing

  1. Lift vehicle and remove transverse member. Install Power Steering System Analyzer (Rotunda 014-00207) to pressure hose on steering gear. Bleed system by turning ignition on (engine off).
  2. Turn steering wheel fully to left and right 10 times. Check fluid level and fill as necessary. Repeat this until system is full. Start engine and turn steering wheel fully to left and right 10 times.
  3. Ensure fluid is not foamy or low. Bleed system until full. When fluid reaches 122-140°F (50-60°C), measure pump output pressure by closing valve of analyzer and increasing engine speed to 1000-1500 RPM. See POWER STEERING PUMP PRESSURE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  4. If pressure is too low, replace power steering pump. If pressure is too high, check for restriction. If restriction is not present, replace power steering pump.
  5. To measure pressure generated at steering gear, open valve on analyzer. Increase engine speed to 1000-1500 RPM. Turn steering wheel fully to left or right and read pressure. See POWER STEERING PUMP PRESSURE SPECIFICATIONS  . If pressure is not within specifications, repair or replace steering gear.
