Quick Test

  1. Visual Check

Check for sufficient brake fluid, damaged wheel sensors or sensor rotors, leaks, and damaged hydraulic actuator assembly. Check ABS system wiring harness connections, looking for bent or broken pins, corrosion, loose wires, and improper routing. Check all fuses for damage and/or proper connection. Check ABS control unit for physical damage. If damage is found, repair/replace damaged items and go to next step. If no damage is found, drive vehicle to verify anti-lock brake symptom and go to next step.
NOTE: Ensure ignition is off before disconnecting or reconnecting any ABS electrical component.
  2. Vehicle Preparation

Apply parking brake. Place shift lever in Park (A/T models) or Neutral (M/T models). Block drive wheels. Turn off all electrical loads, radio, lights, A/C-heater blower fans, etc. When all vehicle preparations have been completed, go to next step.
NOTE: Do not continue with QUICK TEST if vehicle preparation cannot be performed.
  3. ABS Warning Light Indicator

Turn ignition on without starting engine. Observe ABS warning light. If light is on continuously, go to next step. If light is not on, check 15-amp METER fuse and ABS warning light bulb. If fuse and bulb are okay, go to PINPOINT TEST G  . If light is flashing, ensure DLC terminals TBS and GND are not jumped or shorted to ground. See Figure . If light glows 1.5 seconds before going out, go to PINPOINT TEST F  .
NOTE: Some ABS faults require that vehicle be driven in order for warning light to come on. Other faults will cause light to come on each time engine is started.
  4. Check ABS Warning Light Indicator (Engine Running)

Start engine and observe ABS warning light. Drive vehicle if necessary. If light does not turn on, system could be operating normally. If ABS symptom exists, go to PINPOINT TEST G  . If light is on, go to next step (for Super Star II tester) or step 6) (for analog VOM).
NOTE: If using New Generation Star (NGS) Tester to retrieve codes, follow manufacturers instructions.
  5. Equipment Hookup (Super Star II Tester)

Connect Super Star II Tester (007-00028) to Data Link Connector (DLC) with Super MECS Adapter (007-00052). DLC located in engine compartment, near battery. Set adapter in ABS position. Set tester in MECS position. Depress tester switch and latch in TEST mode. Ensure connections are correct. Go to step 7).
  6. Equipment Hookup (Analog VOM)

Turn ignition off. Access Data Link Connector (DLC) located in engine compartment, near battery. Using jumper wire, connect terminal "M" (TBS) to terminal "E" (GND) on DLC connector. Using an analog voltmeter, connect positive voltmeter lead to terminal "G" (FBS) at DLC connector. Connect negative voltmeter lead to ground. See Figure . Ensure connections are correct and go to next step.
  7. ABS Service Code Retrieval

Ensure ABS warning light was on (before equipment hookup) in steps 3) and 4). Turn ignition on. If using Super Star II, turn ignition on, wait 2 seconds then turn tester on. If ABS warning light flashed briefly then went out, system is functioning properly. Check brake system for non-ABS related symptom. If light is constantly on, record trouble codes. Erase trouble codes. See CLEARING TROUBLE CODES  . Re-attempt trouble retrieval. Record re-created trouble codes. Repair codes as necessary. See Figure . If no codes were re-created, go to next step. If light flashes trouble codes, record codes. Erase trouble codes. See CLEARING TROUBLE CODES  . Go to next step.
NOTE: On Super Star II Tester, turn SPKR switch to ON position to use audible warning function. Audible function activates when continuous test fault is detected, eliminating need to visually monitor tester for continuous test faults.
  8. Perform Continuous Test

Perform equipment hookup as outlined in step 5) or 6). Turn ignition on. Working in short sections along wiring from sensor to dash panel and to ABS control module, tap, move and wiggle suspect sensor and/or harness. If necessary, drive vehicle to re-create intermittent failure and to allow control module to sense and record trouble codes. If ABS warning light is on constantly or audible signal sounds from tester, record voltmeter or Super Star II tester trouble codes and refer to TROUBLE CODE IDENTIFICATION CHART. See Figure . Service only trouble codes created in this test. If ABS warning light is not on constantly or audible signal does not sound from tester, system is operating normally. If intermittent fault cannot be re-created, turn ignition off. Disconnect suspect sensor and ABS control module from wiring harness. Visually inspect all terminals for corrosion, bad crimping, improperly seated terminals or damage. Repair or replace, as necessary. Reconnect harness connectors and repeat continuous test.
