Pinpoint Test G - Wipers Continue To Run When Switch Is Off
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 1997 Mercury Mystique and 1997 Ford Contour. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
- Turn ignition on. Remove interval wiper relay from instrument panel fuse block. If wipers stop operating, turn ignition off and go to next step. If wipers still operate, go to step 5).
- Connect an ohmmeter between relay terminals No. 3 and 4. Note resistance reading. See Figure. Also, measure resistance between relay terminals No. 3 and 5. Resistance should be less than 5 ohms between terminals No. 3 and 4. Resistance should be infinite between terminals No. 3 and 5. If resistance is as specified, install relay and go to next step. If resistance is not as specified, replace wiper relay and retest system.
- Disconnect connector "K" from instrument panel fuse block. See Figure. Disconnect wiper motor connector. Measure voltage between ground and terminal No. 4 (White/Blue wire) at connector "K". If battery voltage does not exist, go to next step. If battery voltage exists, repair short to voltage in White/Blue wire and retest system.
- Disconnect wiper motor harness connector. Ensure wiper switch is off. Measure resistance between terminals No. 2 (White/Blue wire) and No. 3 (Purple wire) at wiper motor connector. See Figure. If resistance is more than 10,000 ohms, replace wiper switch and retest system. If resistance is 10,000 ohms or less, replace wiper motor and retest system.
- Measure resistance of White/Blue wire between terminal No. 2 at wiper motor connector and terminal No. 4 at connector "K". See Figure and Figure. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, reconnect connector "K" and go to next step. If resistance is 5 ohms or more, repair open in White/Blue wire and retest system.
- Measure voltage between ground and terminal No. 3 (Purple wire) at wiper motor connector. If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, repair open in Purple wire and retest system.
- Disconnect wiper switch connector. Remove interval wiper relay from instrument panel fuse block. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and terminal No. 4 (White/Black wire) at wiper switch connector. If battery voltage exists, repair short to battery in White/Black wire. If battery voltage does not exist, replace Central Timer Module (CTM) and retest system.
