Wiggle Test

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 1997 Mercury Grand Marquis and 1997 Ford Crown Victoria. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

The wiggle test is designed to help identify and locate intermittent failures in vehicle wiring harness and system components. Once wiggle test is entered, several inputs and outputs of the module are monitored for a change of state. When a state change is encountered, a tone will sound and/or a DTC will be displayed on New Generation Star (NGS) tester. For modules that store DTCs, DTC description will determine an open circuit, short to ground, or short to voltage. By performing wiggle test and pulling on different areas of wiring harness, intermittent open and short circuits can be located and serviced.

  1. Connect New Generation Star (NGS) scan tester on Data Link Connector (DLC) and perform proper hook-up procedure. See EQUIPMENT HOOK-UP under COMMUNICATION NETWORK DIAGNOSTICS .
  2. Turn ignition switch to ON position. Rotate dial on scan tester to DIAGNOSTIC DATA LINK menu and press trigger.
  3. Rotate dial on scan tester to highlight the desired module you wish to access and press trigger. Rotate dial on scan tester to highlight DIAGNOSTIC TEST MODES and press trigger.
  4. Rotate dial on scan tester to highlight WIGGLE TEST. Press trigger, then press START (button 3). If DTCs are present, proceed to LIGHTING CONTROL MODULE (LCM) WIGGLE TEST DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) INDEX TABLE for DTC identification. Repair circuit(s) as necessary.
