Drive Cycle Mode 3

CAUTION: Strict observance of posted speed limits and attention to driving conditions are mandatory when proceeding through the following drive cycle.
NOTE: For aid in Mode 3 description, refer to illustration. See Fig 1.
NOTE: For the Mode 3 driving procedure, it is best to use a stopwatch for accurate timing of the drive cycle.
NOTE: Observing the diagnostic monitors while performing this mode will verify when the mode is complete, as the monitors will clear. If Mode 3 is performed properly and the monitors do not clear, either Mode 1 was not successfully completed or a concern exists with the vehicle.
  1. Ensure Mode 1 has been successfully completed. Turn ignition off. Connect scan tester to OBD-II DLC. Enter PID/DATA MONITOR menu selection. Access VSS PID.
  2. Access the VSS and TP, PID.
  3. Ensure that all accessories are off, including A/C.
  4. Start the engine and the stopwatch.
  5. Idle the vehicle for approximately 5 minutes.
  6. Drive with steady throttle at the specified speed until the stopwatch indicates one minute.
NOTE: If the vehicle speed drops below the indicated speed, the monitoring will temporarily stop until the vehicle reaches the proper speed range again.
  7. When the stopwatch indicates one minute, drive with a steady throttle between 45-65 MPH (72-104 kph) for A/T or 42-62 MPH (68-100 kph) for M/T (4th gear) as indicated by NGS, or 47-65 MPH (75-101 kph) for A/T or 44-60 MPH (71-77 kph) for M/T (4th gear) as indicated by the speedometer. Drive at this pattern for at least 20 seconds. At this point the catalyst monitor is complete.
  8. Turn ignition off and disconnect test equipment.
