Anti-Lock Brake System: Description

CAUTION: See ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SAFETY PRECAUTIONS article in GENERAL INFORMATION.

The Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) allows the driver to stop in the shortest distance while maintaining steering control. During normal anti-lock operation, a pulsation in brake pedal and a clicking sound will be sensed. System consists of a master cylinder/booster assembly, ABS control module, Hydraulic Control Unit (HCU), electric pump/motor, brakelight switch, 4 wheel sensors, and 2 warning lights (Amber ABS and Red BRAKE).

1999 models are available with an optional ABS/traction control system. The hydraulic control unit incorporates additional solenoid valves to control modulation of brake pressures. Traction system is inactive at speeds greater than 53 MPH. Traction control is managed by a combination of fuel and spark adjustment using engine management system.

NOTE: For more information on mechanical brake system, see appropriate DISC & DRUM article.
