Test A: No Communication With Generic Electronic Module

NOTE: After making any repair, repeat Generic Electronic Module (GEM) self-test using NGS tester.
  1. Remove fuse No. 23 (5-amp) from instrument panel fuse box. Measure resistance between ground and output side of fuse No. 23. Resistance should start at greater than one megohm and steadily drop to less than 3 k/ohms. If resistance does not drop as described, go to next step. If resistance drops as described, go to step  7 .
  2. With ohmmeter connected as specified in step  1 , check resistance. If resistance is greater than 10 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is 10 ohms or less, go to step  4 .
  3. Disconnect Generic Electronic Module (GEM) from instrument panel fuse box (connector C201). Disconnect, then reconnect ohmmeter as specified in step  1 . If resistance is not one megohm or less, go to next step. If resistance is greater than one megohm (resistance may drop steadily to less than 3 k/ohms), replace GEM.
  4. Disconnect instrument panel fuse box harness connectors C247 and C235. Measure resistance between ground and terminal No. 5 at GEM connector C201 (on fuse box). See Figure . If resistance is 10 k/ohms or less, replace instrument panel fuse box. If resistance is greater than 10 k/ohms and vehicle is equipped with Passive Anti-Theft System (PATS)/Remote Anti-Theft Personality (RAP), go to next step. If resistance is greater than 10 k/ohms and vehicle is not equipped with PATS/RAP, go to step  7 .
  5. Connect instrument panel fuse box harness connectors C235 and C247. Disconnect PATS module harness connector C242. Disconnect, then reconnect ohmmeter as specified in step  1 . Observe ohmmeter reading. Resistance should start at greater than one megohm and steadily drop to 3 k/ohms or less. If resistance drops as described, replace PATS module. If resistance does not drop as described and vehicle is equipped with RAP module, go to next step. If resistance does not drop as described and vehicle is not equipped with RAP module, repair short to ground in White/Yellow wire.
  6. Disconnect RAP module harness connector C254. Disconnect, then reconnect ohmmeter as specified in step  1 . If resistance is greater than one megohm, replace RAP module. If resistance is one megohm or less, repair short to ground in White/Yellow wire.
  7. Disconnect GEM harness connector C248. Measure resistance between ground and terminals No. 14 (Black wire) and No. 25 (Black wire) at GEM harness connector C248. See Fig 1 . If both resistance readings are 5 ohms or less, go to next step. If either resistance reading is greater than 5 ohms, repair open in appropriate Black wire(s).
  8. Disconnect GEM harness connector C223. Measure resistance between ground and terminal No. 12 (Black/White wire) at GEM harness connector C223. See Fig 2 . If resistance is 5 ohms or less, go to next step. If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, repair open in Black/White wire.
  9. Disconnect GEM harness connector C236. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Measure voltage at terminal No. 14 (Red/Yellow wire) at GEM harness connector C236. See Fig 3 . If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, repair open in Red/Yellow wire.
  10. Measure resistance between ground and terminal No. 22 (Black/Light Green wire) at GEM harness connector C223. See Fig 2 . If resistance is 5 ohms or less, repair module communication concern. See MODULE COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK - SABLE & TAURUS article. If resistance is greater than 5 ohms, repair open in Black/Light Green wire.
