Contact Assembly (CLOCKSPRING): Removal
- Disconnect negative battery cable. Disconnect positive battery cable. Disable air bag system. See DISABLING & ACTIVATING AIR BAG SYSTEM . Ensure front wheels are in straight-ahead position. Mark steering shaft at 12 o'clock position for installation reference. Remove steering wheel. See STEERING WHEEL & HORN PAD .
- Remove lower instrument panel steering column cover. Remove lower and upper steering column shrouds. See Figure and Figure . Disconnect clockspring electrical connector from column harness and attach air bag simulator.
- If contact assembly is to be reused, tape contact assembly to prevent rotation. If contact assembly is rotated, clockspring could be damaged internally. See Figure . Adjust steering wheel to lowest position and remove tilt lever. Remove ignition switch lock cylinder. See LOCK CYLINDER (FUNCTIONAL) or LOCK CYLINDER (NON-FUNCTIONAL) . Remove Passive Anti Theft System Transmitter (PATS). Remove ignition key warning switch terminal and wire.
- On vehicles with column shift, detach shift indicator tube. On all vehicles, disconnect electrical connectors and route wire harness out of wire holders on steering column. Pry retaining clips from steering column and remove contact assembly.
