All Models

Shift interlock system is a 2-function electro/mechanical system which prevents free movement of gearshift lever. On models with column shift, a shift lock actuator is mounted on the steering column. On models with floor mounted gearshift lever, a shift lock actuator is mounted on ignition switch end of interlock cable. This actuator prevents ignition switch from being turned to LOCK position unless gearshift lever is in "P" position. Gearshift lever may not be moved from "P" position if ignition key is in RUN position unless brake pedal is depressed.

On Escort, Escort ZX2, Lincoln LS and Villager, a cable system between ignition switch and gearshift lever prevents ignition key from being removed from switch unless gearshift lever is in "P" position. It also prevents gearshift lever from being moved from "P" position when ignition switch is in LOCK position.

An electronic shift lock actuator, mounted at base of gearshift lever, locks gearshift lever in "P" position until ignition switch is in RUN position and brake pedal is depressed.
