Power Window System: Description

NOTE: This article applies only to 4-door Explorer and Mountaineer models. For Explorer Sport and Explorer Sport Trac testing procedures, see POWER WINDOWS - EXPLORER SPORT & EXPLORER SPORT TRAC article.

Power windows are operated by reversible motors mounted on each window regulator. Each passenger's window has an individual switch for separate control. A master window/door lock switch, located on the driver's door, controls both front and rear (if equipped) windows. A lock-out switch is incorporated in master window/door lock switch. When actuated, lock-out switch prevents window operation from individual switches.

All models are equipped with a one-touch down feature, allowing the driver to lower the left front window fully by momentarily actuating the driver's window down switch at the master window/door lock switch. Holding the switch down longer allows the driver to stop the window as soon as the switch is released. The one-touch down feature is controlled by a Generic Electronic Module (GEM), which may also be referred to as Central Timer Module (CTM). The GEM offers diagnostics to locate and repair concerns affecting the subsystem it controls. The one-touch down feature can only be actuated at the master window/door lock switch. Power windows operate only when ignition switch is in RUN or ACC positions. After ignition is turned off, delayed accessory feature will allow window operation until a passenger door is opened, or 10 minutes have passed.

Generic Electronic Module (GEM) is used on vehicles equipped with 4-wheel drive and/or power windows. Central Timer Module (CTM) is used only on 2-wheel drive vehicles without power windows. GEM constantly monitors power window system, as well as others, and can be accessed using a scan tool for power window system diagnostics. CTM does not provide diagnostics.
