Bleeding Brake System

CAUTION: See ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SAFETY PRECAUTIONS article in GENERAL INFORMATION.
CAUTION: The anti-lock brake system must be bled using following procedure. If this procedure is not followed, air may be trapped in Hydraulic Control Unit (HCU), resulting in a spongy pedal.
NOTE: DO NOT allow master cylinder to run dry during bleeding procedure.
  1. Turn ignition off. Connect a clear bleeder hose to left front bleed screw. Open left front bleed screw. Cycle brake pedal 25-30 times or until no air is seen in bleeder hose. Close left front bleed screw. Repeat procedure for remaining wheels. Bleed front wheels before bleeding rear wheels. See BLEEDING SEQUENCE  table.
    BLEEDING SEQUENCE

    Application Sequence
    Windstar
    Front LF, RF
    Rear LR, RR
NOTE: Performing New Generation Star (NGS) program routine drives trapped air from inaccessible lower sections of ABS valve into upper sections (accessible by bleeding at brakes). Bleeding procedure removes air from system.
  2. Attach New Generation Star (NGS) Tester (007-00500) according to equipment manufacturer's instructions. Follow menus and prompts. Select DDS FUNCTIONS menu. Choose 4-WABS menu. From 4-WABS menu, choose BLEED PROCEDURE and follow prompts.
  3. One conventional pressure bleed cycle consists of fully depressing brake pedal, opening bleed screw, allowing fluid to flow, closing bleed screw, and releasing brake pedal. Perform a minimum of 7 conventional pressure bleed cycles for left and right front brakes.
  4. Perform steps 2)-3)  2 times. On last bleed cycle, bleed rear brakes to ensure all air is removed from system. See BLEEDING SEQUENCE  table.
