Engine Front Cover: Installation

- Apply sealant along the cylinder head-to-block surface and the oil pan-to-cylinder block surface.
- Install the engine front cover on the front cover-to-cylinder block dowel and loosely install the bolts.
- Tighten the front cover fasteners in the sequence shown to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft).
- Install the idler pulley and the bolt.
- Tighten to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft).
- Install the shield and the bolts(s).
- Tighten to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft).
- Loosely install the 4 front oil pan bolts.
- Tighten the 4 front oil pan bolts in 2 stages.
- Stage 1: Tighten to 20 Nm (15 lb-ft).
- Stage 2: Tighten an additional 60 degrees.
- Install the oil pan drain plug.
- Tighten to 13 Nm (10 lb-ft).
- Position the power steering pump and install the 4 bolts.
- Tighten to 25 Nm (18 lb-ft).
- Install a new crankshaft front oil seal. For additional information, refer to CRANKSHAFT FRONT SEAL .
- Install the coolant pump. For additional information, refer to ENGINE COOLING .
- Install the valve covers. For additional information, refer to VALVE COVER - RH or VALVE COVER - LH .
- Connect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to BATTERY, MOUNTING AND CABLES .
- Fill the engine with clean engine oil.
- If equipped with fire suppression system, repower the system.
NOTE:
If the engine front cover is not secured within 4 minutes, the sealant must be removed and the sealing area cleaned with metal surface cleaner. Allow to dry until there is no sign of wetness, or for 4 minutes, whichever is longer. Failure to follow this procedure can cause future oil leakage.
NOTE:
Limousines are equipped with 2 bolts retaining the shield.
NOTE:
Make sure to tighten the bolts in 2 stages.
NOTE:
The front lower hole in the power steering pump is not used.
