Removal and Installation

CAUTION: During engine repair procedures, cleanliness is extremely important. Any foreign material including any material created while cleaning gasket surfaces that enters the oil passages, coolant passages or the oil pan can cause engine failure.
CAUTION: If removing more than one valve tappet, mark the components removed for correct locations.
  1. Remove the lower intake manifold. For additional information, refer to LOWER INTAKE MANIFOLD .
  2. Remove the valve covers. For additional information, refer to VALVE COVER-RH  and VALVE COVER-LH .
  3. Remove the rocker arms. For additional information, refer to ROCKER ARM .
  4. Remove the push rods.

  5. Remove the valve tappets.
    1. Remove the bolts.
    2. Remove the tappet guide plate and retainer.
    3. Remove the valve tappets.

  6. NOTE: Lubricate the valve tappets with clean engine oil before installing.

  7. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
