Disassembly And Assembly Of Subassemblies: Accumulators: Assembly
- Clean all components with a suitable solvent and use compressed air to dry all parts and clean the fluid passages.
- Inspect the accumulator piston for damage or wear.
- Check for worn or broken accumulator spring(s).
- Measure the free length of the accumulator spring.
- If not within the specification, replace the spring.
- Install the lubricated accumulator piston into the transmission case bore.
- Apply the Motorcraft MERCON® Multi-Purpose Automatic Transmission Fluid XT-2-QDX or equivalent meeting Ford specification MERCON to the seal ring.
- Install the accumulator piston into the proper bore in the transmission case.
- Install the new O-ring onto the accumulator spring retainer.
- Apply the Motorcraft MERCON® Multi-Purpose Automatic Transmission Fluid XT-2-QDX or equivalent meeting Ford specification MERCON to the new O-ring.
- Seat the lubricated new O-ring in the groove on the accumulator spring retainer.
- Install the accumulator spring retainer.
- Install the accumulator piston spring.
- Install the accumulator spring retainer.
- 6. Install the accumulator piston retaining ring while pressing in the accumulator spring retainer.
CAUTION:
Do not remove the seal rings from the accumulator piston. If necessary, replace them as an assembly for proper transmission operation.
NOTE:
Do not compress the spring when measuring it with vernier calipers.
NOTE:
For accumulator spring specifications, refer to Fig 1.
CAUTION:
Apply even pressure to the perimeter of the accumulator piston to avoid damaging the seal ring.
CAUTION:
Apply even pressure to the perimeter of the accumulator spring retainer to avoid damaging the new O-ring.
CAUTION:
When installing an accumulator with two accumulator springs, install the accumulator springs in the correct order.
