Disassembly And Assembly Of Subassemblies: Accumulators: Assembly

    CAUTION: Do not remove the seal rings from the accumulator piston. If necessary, replace them as an assembly for proper transmission operation.
  1. Clean all components with a suitable solvent and use compressed air to dry all parts and clean the fluid passages.
    • Inspect the accumulator piston for damage or wear.
    • Check for worn or broken accumulator spring(s).
  2. NOTE: Do not compress the spring when measuring it with vernier calipers.
    NOTE: For accumulator spring specifications, refer to Fig 1.

  3. Measure the free length of the accumulator spring.
    • If not within the specification, replace the spring.
  4. CAUTION: Apply even pressure to the perimeter of the accumulator piston to avoid damaging the seal ring.

  5. Install the lubricated accumulator piston into the transmission case bore.
    1. Apply the Motorcraft MERCON® Multi-Purpose Automatic Transmission Fluid XT-2-QDX or equivalent meeting Ford specification MERCON to the seal ring.
    2. Install the accumulator piston into the proper bore in the transmission case.
  6. Install the new O-ring onto the accumulator spring retainer.
    1. Apply the Motorcraft MERCON® Multi-Purpose Automatic Transmission Fluid XT-2-QDX or equivalent meeting Ford specification MERCON to the new O-ring.
    2. Seat the lubricated new O-ring in the groove on the accumulator spring retainer.

  7. CAUTION: Apply even pressure to the perimeter of the accumulator spring retainer to avoid damaging the new O-ring.
    CAUTION: When installing an accumulator with two accumulator springs, install the accumulator springs in the correct order.

  8. Install the accumulator spring retainer.
    1. Install the accumulator piston spring.
    2. Install the accumulator spring retainer.
  9. 6. Install the accumulator piston retaining ring while pressing in the accumulator spring retainer.
