Automatic Transaxle/Transmission: Installation: Transaxle: Procedure
- Secure the transmission on Hi-Lift Transmission Jack. Raise the transmission to the proper height and position the transmission to the engine.
- Install the middle transmission to engine bolts.
- Install the four flywheel to converter retaining nuts.
- Install the transmission housing cover.
- Install the housing cover.
- Install the bolts.
- Install the transmission support crossmember.
- Install the transmission support crossmember bolts and nuts.
- Install the rear engine isolator nuts.
- Install the front engine isolator nuts.
- Install the drain plug with a new washer.
- Connect the heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) to the wire clip.
- Install the halfshafts; refer to AXLE SHAFTS .
- Install the starter motor; refer to STARTERS .
- Lower the vehicle.
- Install the two upper transmission to engine bolts.
- Install the LH engine support insulator nuts and washers.
- Connect the fluid cooler lines to the transmission.
- Remove Three-Bar Engine Support.
- Connect the vehicle speed sensor (VSS) electrical connector.
- Connect the HO2S electrical connector.
- Connect the (A) transmission range selector electrical connector, the (B) transmission solenoid electrical connector, and the (C) turbine signal sensor electrical connector.
- Install the shift cable and bracket.
- Install the shift cable and bracket nut to the manual control shift lever.
- Install the shift cable and bracket clip.
- Adjust the shift cable; refer to TRANSAXLE/TRANSMISSION COOLING EXTERNAL CONTROLS .
- Install the computer control relay module (CCRM).
- Install the CCRM and bracket as an assembly.
- Install the CCRM bracket bolt and the CCRM bracket nut.
- Connect the CCRM electrical connector.
- Install the engine air cleaner; refer to AIR INDUCTION SYSTEMS .
- Install the air cleaner inlet tube; refer to AIR INDUCTION SYSTEMS .
- Install the battery tray; refer to BATTERY TRAY .
- Add the specified amount of Motorcraft MERCON® Multi-Purpose Automatic Transmission Fluid XT-2-QDX or equivalent meeting Ford specification MERCON to the proper level and check for leaks. With the engine at operating temperature, recheck the level and for leaks.
- Road test the vehicle and check the shift points and shift quality.
NOTE:
Prior to installation of the transmission assembly, the torque converter pilot hub must be properly lubricated. Use Ford Multi-Purpose Grease DOAZ-19584-AA or equivalent meeting Ford specification ESR-M1C159-A and ESB-M1C93-B.
NOTE:
Align the torque converter studs to the flywheel.
NOTE:
Connect the A/C line to the retainer located on the front of the engine support crossmember.
