Automatic Transaxle/Transmission: Installation: Transaxle: Procedure

    NOTE: Prior to installation of the transmission assembly, the torque converter pilot hub must be properly lubricated. Use Ford Multi-Purpose Grease DOAZ-19584-AA or equivalent meeting Ford specification ESR-M1C159-A and ESB-M1C93-B.
    NOTE: Align the torque converter studs to the flywheel.

  1. Secure the transmission on Hi-Lift Transmission Jack. Raise the transmission to the proper height and position the transmission to the engine.
  2. Install the middle transmission to engine bolts.

  3. Install the four flywheel to converter retaining nuts.

  4. Install the transmission housing cover.
    1. Install the housing cover.
    2. Install the bolts.

  5. NOTE: Connect the A/C line to the retainer located on the front of the engine support crossmember.

  6. Install the transmission support crossmember.
    1. Install the transmission support crossmember bolts and nuts.
    2. Install the rear engine isolator nuts.
    3. Install the front engine isolator nuts.
  7. Install the drain plug with a new washer.

  8. Connect the heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) to the wire clip.

  9. Install the halfshafts; refer to AXLE SHAFTS .
  10. Install the starter motor; refer to STARTERS .
  11. Lower the vehicle.
  12. Install the two upper transmission to engine bolts.

  13. Install the LH engine support insulator nuts and washers.

  14. Connect the fluid cooler lines to the transmission.

  15. Remove Three-Bar Engine Support.

  16. Connect the vehicle speed sensor (VSS) electrical connector.

  17. Connect the HO2S electrical connector.

  18. Connect the (A) transmission range selector electrical connector, the (B) transmission solenoid electrical connector, and the (C) turbine signal sensor electrical connector.

  19. Install the shift cable and bracket.
    1. Install the shift cable and bracket nut to the manual control shift lever.
    2. Install the shift cable and bracket clip.

  20. Install the computer control relay module (CCRM).
    1. Install the CCRM and bracket as an assembly.
    2. Install the CCRM bracket bolt and the CCRM bracket nut.
    3. Connect the CCRM electrical connector.

  21. Install the engine air cleaner; refer to AIR INDUCTION SYSTEMS .
  22. Install the air cleaner inlet tube; refer to AIR INDUCTION SYSTEMS .
  23. Install the battery tray; refer to BATTERY TRAY .
  24. Add the specified amount of Motorcraft MERCON® Multi-Purpose Automatic Transmission Fluid XT-2-QDX or equivalent meeting Ford specification MERCON to the proper level and check for leaks. With the engine at operating temperature, recheck the level and for leaks.
  25. Road test the vehicle and check the shift points and shift quality.
