Automatic Transaxle/Transmission: Removal: Transaxle: Procedure

  1. Remove the battery tray (10732); refer to BATTERY TRAY .
  2. Remove the air cleaner outlet tube (9B659); refer to AIR INDUCTION SYSTEMS .
  3. Remove the engine air cleaner (ACL) (9600); refer to AIR INDUCTION SYSTEMS .
  4. Remove the computer control relay module (CCRM).
    1. Disconnect the CCRM electrical connector.
    2. Remove the CCRM bracket bolt and the CCRM bracket nut.
    3. Remove the CCRM and bracket as an assembly.

  5. Remove the shift cable and bracket (7E395) and position it aside.
    1. Remove the shift cable and bracket nut from the manual control shift outer lever (7G354).
    2. Remove the shift cable and bracket clip.

  6. Disconnect the (A) transmission range (TR) sensor electrical connector, the (B) transmission solenoid electrical connector, and the (C) turbine shaft speed (TSS) sensor electrical connector.

  7. Disconnect the downstream catalyst monitor sensor electrical connector.

  8. Disconnect the vehicle speed sensor (VSS) electrical connector.

  9. Remove the starter motor; refer to STARTERS .
  10. Install Three-Bar Engine Support.

  11. NOTE: Place a drain pan under the transmission before disconnecting the fluid cooler lines.

  12. Disconnect the fluid cooler lines from the transmission.
  13. Remove the LH engine support insulator nuts and washers.

  14. Remove the upper transmission to engine bolts.

  15. Raise and support the vehicle; refer to JACKING & HOISTING .
  16. Remove the case plug (7A010) and drain the transmission fluid.

  17. Remove the RH and LH halfshafts; refer to AXLE SHAFTS .
  18. Disconnect the heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) wire clip.

  19. Remove the crossmember.
    1. Remove the bolts.
    2. Remove the crossmember.

  20. Remove the three-way catalytic converter; refer to EXHAUST SYSTEM ..
  21. NOTE: Disconnect the A/C line from the retainer located on the front of the front engine crossmember.

  22. Remove the transmission support crossmember.
    1. Remove the transmission support crossmember bolts and nuts.
    2. Remove the LH engine isolator nuts.
    3. Remove the transmission isolator nuts.
  23. Remove the transmission housing cover.
    1. Remove the bolts.
    2. Remove the housing cover.

  24. Remove the four flywheel to converter retaining nuts.

  25. Position Transmission Jack under the transmission. Secure the transmission to the jack.

  26. Remove the five remaining transmission to engine bolts.

  27. Carefully lower the transmission out of the vehicle.
