Principles of Operation: Notes
The anti-lock brake system (ABS) module, with or without stability assist, simultaneously manages the anti-lock braking, traction control and engine control systems to maintain vehicle control during deceleration and acceleration. The ABS accomplishes this by communicating with the other modules over the high speed controller area network (HS-CAN) bus.
When the ignition switch is in the RUN position, the module carries out a preliminary electrical check and, at approximately 20 km/h (12 mph), the hydraulic pump motor is turned on for approximately one half-second. Any malfunction of the anti-lock brake system disables the traction control and stability assist (if equipped). The ABS module communicates with the instrument cluster over the HS-CAN bus and the cluster illuminates the anti-lock brake warning indicator. However, the power-assist braking system functions normally.
