Pinpoint Test A: Accelerator Pedal Is Hard To Push Down

  1. A1 CHECK THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL AND CABLE TRAVEL 
    • Disconnect the cable end from the throttle body linkage.
    • Make sure the disconnected end of the accelerator cable does not come in contact with any of the surrounding parts.
    • Operate the accelerator pedal and shaft by hand.
    • Is the full pedal travel to wide open throttle (WOT) restricted by carpeting, floor mats or other obstruction? 
    1. YES  : REMOVE the obstruction to pedal travel.
    2. NO  : Go to  A2.
  2. A2 CHECK THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL AND CABLE FOR BINDING 
      NOTE: The accelerator cable should not be lubricated and is not a repairable item.
    • With the cable end disconnected, operate the pedal by foot.
    • Is the pedal operation smooth? 
    1. YES  : REFER to the Introduction - Gasoline Engines for diagnosis and testing of the throttle body.
    2. NO  : CHECK the accelerator pedal and shaft for free operation. INSTALL a new accelerator cable as necessary. If accelerator pedal and shaft have free operation, go to Pinpoint Test B .
