Chain Cover: Assembly

  1. Measure the distance that the center bimetal element pin protrudes from the chain cover.

  3. Using the special tool, install the bimetal element.
    1. Position the bimetal strip onto the end of the pin.
    2. Install the special tool under the bimetal element.
    3. Tap the retaining collar onto the pin until it seats against the tool edge.

  5. Remove the slotted end of the bimetal element and install the thermostat plate over the end and middle pins.

  7. Install the slotted end of the bimetal element under the retaining ring.

    CAUTION: Do not allow the pistons to cock in their bores or damage to the seals may result.
    NOTE: Coat the new seals with petroleum jelly.
  9. Install new seals on the accumulator pistons.

  11. Install the pistons into the correct bore of the cover with spring pocket up.

    NOTE: The use of petroleum jelly will hold the accumulator piston shafts in place while assembling the chain cover.
  13. Install the accumulator piston shafts.

  15. Install the manual valve detent spring and bolt.
    • Tighten to 11 Nm (8 lb-ft).

    NOTE: The use of petroleum jelly will hold the thrust washers in place during assembly.
  17. Install the thrust washers.
    1. Install the No. 1 drive sprocket thrust washer.
    2. Install the No. 3 chain cover thrust washer.

  19. Install internal wire harness if it was removed.
