Symptom Chart
Diagnostics in this article assume a certain skill level and knowledge of Ford-specific diagnostic practices. REFER to: Diagnostic Methods .
In most circumstances, the TCM sets a DTC to help guide diagnostics. Refer to the DTC Chart before using the Symptom Chart. The Symptom column lists the vehicle condition. The Possible Sources column lists a detailed vehicle condition. The Action column lists the action to be performed to determine the cause of the condition. Each action lists the components that can cause the symptom and the individual components in that system.
| Symptom | Possible Sources | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Brake transmission shift interlock system does not release correctly | TCM is currently in adaptive learning mode. | WAIT for the TCM to complete the adaptive learning cycle. |
| Instrument cluster has not initialized. | WAIT for the instrument cluster initialize. | |
| Instrument cluster is malfunctioning. | CHECK the instrument cluster for correct function. REFER to: Instrumentation, Message Center and Warning Chimes . | |
| Circuit open or shorted Brake shift interlock actuator switch GSM |
GO to Pinpoint Test B | |
| Transmission stuck in park position | Transmission | If any electrical diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) are present, RESOLVE those first. If any module or communication diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) are present, RESOLVE those second. Otherwise, INSTALL a new transmission. REFER to: Transmission - Detach from Engine . |
| Transmission returns to park automatically | The criteria for the return to park feature was met Driver door ajar switch Circuit open or shorted BCM GSM |
GO to Pinpoint Test J |
| Transmission does not return to park when the door is opened | Driver door ajar switch Circuit open or shorted BCM GSM |
GO to Pinpoint Test J |
| Interference or debris preventing the rotary shift knob from rotating GSM |
GO to Pinpoint Test I | |
| No park range OR transmission stuck in drive | GSM | RESOLVE all GSM diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) first. If no diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) are present, monitor PCM PID GEAR. Select P, R, N and D on the GSM. If PID GEAR does not correspond to the selected gear, INSTALL a new GSM. REFER to: Gear Shift Module (GSM) . |
| TCM | RESOLVE all TCM diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs). REFER to: Automatic Transmission
. If no diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) are present, PROGRAM the original TCM with the latest calibration. REFER to: Module Programming . CLEAR the TCMNVM and CARRY OUT the TCM adaptive learning procedure. REFER to: Transmission Control Module (TCM) Adaptive Learning . If the concern is still present, INSTALL a new TCM. PROGRAM the new TCM with the latest calibration. REFER to: Module Programming . CLEAR the TCM NVM and CARRY OUT the TCM adaptive learning procedure.
