Towing Precautions

Fig 1: Typical Rear Towing Hookup
G30679
  1. All 2WD vehicles with automatic transmissions may be towed at speeds less than 35 MPH for distances up to 50 miles. These speed and distance restrictions do not apply to vehicles equipped with manual transmissions.
  2. The steering wheels must be unlocked, transmission in Neutral, and parking brake released. Connect towing equipment to main structural parts of vehicle, not bumpers or brackets; follow the instructions of wrecker manufacturer.
NOTE: If 2WD or 4WD vehicles are to be towed with the rear wheels off the ground, the steering wheel should be locked in the straight-ahead position. Do not use steering lock mechanism.
  3. If 4WD vehicles (except "S" series) are to be towed with the front wheels off the ground, place transfer case in "2H" position and transmission in Neutral. Tow vehicle at speeds less than 35 MPH and for a maximum distance of 50 miles.
  4. For speeds and distances greater than specified, disconnect the rear drive shaft at rear axle carrier. Secure drive shaft to underside of vehicle. Tape "U" joint bearing journal caps.
  5. If 4WD vehicles are to be towed with the rear wheels off the ground, place the transfer case in "2H" position and transmission in Neutral. For speeds and distances greater than specified, remove front drive shaft and store in vehicle.
